WILTON posted by Penny Deib on Saturday, February 5, 2000

Need to know where to search for records of Havre Mail Carriers. Just found out that Grt. Grandfather's (Thomas F. C. Wilton) occupation was a mail carrier for Havre in 1899. His address was given as Havre P.O., of Havre Post Office. Hope to find a contract or record of payment that might establish where he lived.

FOIEN posted by Lois Stedel on Thursday, March 2, 2000

I am looking for information on my aunt CARRIE FOIEN who lived in Fort Benton and worked in the school district in the 1930's. She passed away suddenly in October of 1938. We do not know how she died or where she was buried. She had a brother in Duchess, Alberta Canada. Her mother lived with her, her name was INGER FOIEN, unknown death date. Carrie never married from what we can find out, but we have little information on her. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

MEE posted by Marie Mee on Thursday, March 9, 2000

I have two brothers, Abraham Mee (b. 1820 in PA.) and Richard Mee (born about 1822 in PA.), who traveled from Somerville, Butler County, Ohio, in 1880 to Chouteau County, Fort Benton, Montana. they are reflected in the 1880 census of Chouteau County. I'm trying to discover what might have attracted them to Fort Benton and how long they stayed. The family lore is that they were prospecting for gold out west. Both men returned to Ohio and are buried there. Any information on the history of Fort Benton and Chouteau County at that time would be appreciated.

ADCOCK, CHASE posted by Richard Eklund on Saturday, March 11, 2000

I am looking for a marriage record of John Chase and Hester Ann Adcock.
Thier daughter, Mattie, was born about 1884. My guess is they married about 1880 to 1884. Not sure of the location of marriage but know John went to Chouteau County in 1870 as a twelve year old. His obituary said "he operated a ranch at Choteau and was well known throughout the area." Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

LODER posted by Bill Bowman on Saturday, March 18, 2000

Part of inscription on tombstone in New Jersey follows:
"Lt. Samuel H Loder U.S. 7th Inf...... injured in battle with Sioux indians on Careless Creek 17 Apr 1879 which he commanded. Died Ft Benton M.T. 30 June 1879."
Unable to find anything on this event or a 'day book' for this time. He would have been 23 years of age which is curious since I don't think he attended West Point.
Any suggestions on where to research would be appreciated. snail mail:,br> P.O. Box 28 Paris, ME 04271

HOLMES, TUBBS posted by Christine Smith on Tuesday, March 28, 2000

According to a recently found newspaper article about him, Zera Holmes went to Montana in 1879 to work as a sheep herder, perhaps on an uncle's ranch. The uncle may have been named Tubbs or Holmes.
The following summer his wife, Nellie Curtis Holmes, joined him near Fort Benton. The following winter found them in Bear Paws, where Holmes was in charge of a group of wood cutters to supply Fort Benton with wood.
Later he drove the stage from Fort Benton to Fort McCloud. A son, Fred Holmes, was born in Fort Benton in 1881.
I would appreciate any information on this family's time in Montana.
The article indicates that they lived a very exciting life in the west, were divorced, married other people, and then remarried after the deaths of the second spouses. In between, Zera worked as a vocalist with a number of minstrel groups. Thanks in advance, Christine
