Regiment was corps artillery and not assigned to any division while in action, later attached to 6th div.; discharged June 30, 1919, Fort Russell, Wyo.; corporal. Slightly gassed Oct. 31, 1918. Has first class gunner's rating. Wounded Nov. 7, 1918 near Laneuville, France.

BEUTEL, Albert F.

age 27; Fritz H. Beutel, father, Eureka, Montana; served in Co. M, 150th Railway Transportation Corps; discharged August 20, 1919, at Fort Russell, Wyo.; private.

BICKERS, Everett

entered service June 24, 1918,; embarked for France in August in a replaement unit, joined 77th div; was member of the famous "Lost Battallion" which was surrounded by Germans for 10 days in the Argonne Forest. Wounded by a bullet through both thighs second day of seige and laid helpless in a shallow hole until battalion was rescued.

BORUP, Jens P.

age 28, Johannas Borup, father, Arden, Denmark; served in 166th Depot Brigade, 159th Inf, 307th Inf.; in Meuse-Argonne offensive; discharged May 22, 1919, at Fort Russell, Wyo.; private. First day over the top rifle was shot in two from machine gun bullets, when 307th helped the Lost Battalion out of their famous trap.

BROCK, Guy O.

age 24, entered service May 29, 1918, Sarah Jane Brock, mother, Eureka, Montana; served in 34th Engineers in Gievres, Nantes and St. Nazaire, France; discharged Sept 27, 1919 at Camp Dodge, Iowa; wagoner.

BROCK, Roy O.

entered service May, 1918; age 26; Mrs. Sarah Brock, mother, Gateway, Montana; was in Co. K 159th Inf. 40th Div. at Camp Kierney, Cal., and went to France with this Co., transferred to 324th Machine Gun Co., joined them at Roan-Lietape, on the front in the St. Die sector, was in Meuse-Argonne offensive, went over the top the morning of Oct. 9th and was knocked senseless from shell shock the night of the 10th in Manulles, a town taken that day; discharged June 30, 1919, at Fort Russell, Wyo; first class private.

BRODERICK, James

age 27; entered service Oct. 6, 1917; Mrs. P. Broderick, mother, Eureka, Montana; went across with 163rd Inf., 41st Div., and was attached to officer's school at Langres, France, for one year; served in Italy with 272 M. P. Co.; discharged at Fort Russell, Wyoming on Aug. 29, 1919; private.

BRODERICK, William

age 24, entered service May 23, 1918; Mr. and Mrs. Pat Broderick, parents, Eureka, Montana; went across Atlantic in August, 1918, with 40th Division, transferred to 32nd Div., Co. K, 125th Inf; in Meuse-Argonne offensive; discharged May 28, 1919, at Fort Russell, Wyoming; private.

BUTTS, David W.

Gateway; 22 years; entered service Oct. 7, 1917; served in 163rd Inf. 41st Div.; discharged March 5, 1919 at Camp Funston, Kansas; private. Slightly wounded.

N., served at Headquarters, Naval Overseas Transportation Service, New York City; discharged April 27, 1919, New York City; Ensign (P. C.) U. S. N. R. F.
 

"In Memory Of" COLLAR, Franc

of Rexford, died in France of bronchial pneumonia, November 30th, 1918. He had taken part in some of the greatest battles of the war, prior to his illness. But beyond that fact, little is known of his record in France. Was about 25 years old. Born in Forkston, Pa. He came to the Tobacco Valley with his parents when a small boy, His father is Ira Collar, of Rexford, a veteran of the Civil War. He had two brothers in Rexford and two sisters in Alberta. Entered service Sept. 23, 1917. Went overseas with the 358th Field Artillery in July, 1918.

F.; battles of Verdun front; discharged April 21, 1919, at Fort Russell, Wyo.; private first class. At Brest, France, on March 16, 1919, 347th F. A. acted as guard for President Wilson.

Y., and from there to Boston, where took ship to France; in Argonne battle, up to Grand Pris, and up the Meuse river, discharged March 15, 1919, at Fort Russell, Wyo.; private.

DRAKE, E.

entered service Sept. 20, 1917; served in Field Hospital and Engineers (Mechanical Regiment); in St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne, also along Toul sector in minor offensives; discharged June 11, 1919, at Camp Grant, Illinois; wagoner.

"In Memory Of" FRYE, Rudi

age 23, entered service from Ural, Montana, May 29, 1918. His father, Wenzel Frye, and his mother, live at Ural, Montana. Served at Camp Lewis, Washington, in the 166th Depot Brigade, Camp Kearney in Co. K. 159th Inf. 40th Division and at Camp Mills, N. Y. Frye was feeling badly when his regiment embarked for France on ship "Osterby" on August 7th, 1918, but would say nothing to the regimental surgeons for fear they would leave him behind. Two days later, however, when his pain became unbearable he reported at the ship's hospital where a diagnosis of acute appendicitis and peritonitis was made. Red Cross nurses and the best surgeons gave hime careful attention day and night, but could not save him. He died seven days afterward and was buried in Liverpool, England.

 

One of the doctors in writing to his mother said; "He was a good brave lad and game to the last and it made us all feel very badly to have lost him." His body has been shipped home from England and buried at Ural, Montana on Ocober 13, 1918.

Camp Mills and France, 3rd Machine Gun Bn. 1st Div., France and Germany; battles in Toul sector, Montidier-Noyon, Saizerais, Cantigny, aisne-Marne, St. Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne and Army of Occupation; discharged Sept 26, 1919, at Fort Russell, Wyo.; corporal.

FROST, Olen J.

age 25; Mida T. Frost, mother, Alliance, Neb.; served in 163rd Inf., formerly Montana National Guard, and 107 Engineers, detachment of 32nd Div.; on Alsace sector, Oisne-Marne offensive, Meuse-Argonne offensive; discharged June 4, 1919, at fort Russell, Wyoming; horseshoer.

FLINT, William L.

age 30; Mrs. Isabelle Flint, mother, Whitefish, Montana; served in Co. K 62nd Inf., Camp Fremont, Cal., May-Aug. 1918, sailed for Siberia Sept. 2, 1918, served in Co. B. 31st Inf. A. E. F. Siberia, Oct. 1918-Sept. 1919, sailed for San Francisco Sept, 11, 1919, by way of Nagasaki, Manila, Guarm and Honolulu; discharged Oct. 23, 1919 at Presidio of San Francisco; private.

FORTIN, Oscar L.

age 26; Mr. and Mrs. Octave Fortin, father and mother, Trego, Mont.; served in 48th Aero Squadron, Kelly Field, Texas, Selridge Field, Mich., Fort Logan, Col.; discharged Dec 28, 1918, at Fort Logan, Col.; chauffeur first class.

"In Memory Of" GROW, Floyd Guy

age 26 years, entered the service from Rexford, Montana, May 29, 1918. His father and mother, Schuyler R. and Cora I. Grow reside at Seattle Wash. Went from Libby, Montana to Camp Lewis, and was in 166th Depot Brigade, 35th Co., 9th Bn. Left Camp Lewis for Camp Fremont, Cal., on aug. 14, and was assigned to Co. G., 8th Infantry. Left Camp Fremont about Oct, 19, for Camp Mills, N. Y., where he failed to pass the overseas examination. Was assigned to Co. F., 12th U. S. Inf., 8th Division, and was sent to Camp Stuart, Virginia, and from there to Camp Morrison, Virginia, where he was promoted to corporal. Was operated on for floating kidney April 21, 1918, and died May 17th of intussusception.
 

GAREY, James M.

age 24; entered service July 23, 1917; F. P. Garey, father, Eureka, Montana; enlisted at Fort Wright, assigned to Co. C 10th Engineers, Camp American University, Washington, D. C., left U. S. for France Sept. 10, 1917, transferred to 3rd div. 10th Engr., transferred to Det. 32nd Co. 20th Engr., returned from France Feb. 1, 1919; discharged Feb. 21, 1919, at Camp Lewis; sergeant f irst class Engineers.
