Golden Vance and Daughter Doris, Family Wheat Field Golden Vance, "a farmer outstanding in his field," so to speak, can barely see over his remarkable wheat crop in 1948 or 1950. His youngest daughter Doris was about six years old and so much shorter than the wheat that she had to hold her hat on a stick to attest to her presence. The photo was taken by Golden's wife, Arleen. They held a diversified farm from 1939's Federal Resettlement Project into the 1980s on the Crowe Bench of the Greenfield's Irrigation Project north of Fort Shaw, Cascade County. To be sure, even for an irrigated farm, this was an unusual wheat crop. Crowe Bench, near Fort Shaw Cary Holmquist holmswed@bigsky.net Copyright 1998-2011 All Rights Reserved
