St. Mary Assumption Catholic Church
Laurin, Montana, (pronounced "La-RAY"). In Madison County Montana was once a Northern Pacific Railroad Station. IT was known as Cicero until a Canadian. John Laurin, purchased land there and opened a trading store nearby. The store provided materials for the miners in the region as well as acted as a trading post for Native American furs. As the devout Catholic Laurin family prospered over the next forty years, they built a magnificent Catholic Church out of stone natve to the area. Built in 1901, St Mary Assumption Church is still the prominent feature of the little community of Laurin. Laurin now consists of several homes, the church and a small school house for the neighboring farms and ranch families.
