Shelby August 1923.
This is (not the greatest) photos of the crowd at the fight on July 4, 1923 in Shelby between Jack Dempsey and Tommy Gibbons (for heavyweight champion). Apparently my great-grandfather C.B. Roberts was head of the Shelby Chamber of Commerce at the time, and may well have borne some responsibility for what was, ultimately, a major fiasco for the town.
