OLIVE MAY CHAFFIN
PETERSON
Olive May Chaffin was the daughter of Amos Calvin
Chaffin and great granddaughter of Balaam Chaffin. She was born in Missoula,
May 8, 1923 and married John Harry Peterson July 3, 1943. The couple had
2 children:, Janet Elaine, born May 31, 1946, and Jack Dennis, born July
4, 1947 in Missoula.
Olive's husband, John Peterson, was a major in the
Air Force and has an outstanding record in the service. He flew 68 fighter
missions in Europe during WWII, earing the distinguished Flying Cross, 11
air medals, the purple heart, 2 Presidential Citations, and the Air Force
Commendation Medal during his 17-year career.
Olive has always been interest in family history.
In 1964, she re-visited the Bitter Root Valley and talked with Glenn Chaffin
and Hattie Mitchell. A lot of material was generously loaned to her and in
January 1966, the genealogy was completed. Thanks to her, the Chaffin, Mitchell,
and Summers families have been well documented.
