What Relationship are We ?
Below is a chart telling what relation you are to
others in your family tree through nine generations. For ease of charting, it is
assumed that person #1 and #2 are male.
Instructions for use:
1. Find the common ancestor who would be in the box "common ancestor".
2. Across the top row of the chart, find the relationship of person #1 to the
common ancestor.
3. Down the left edge of the chart find the relationship of person #2 to the
common ancestor.
4. Now go down the column of person #1's relation until you meet the row where
person #2 is. Whatever the relationship in that box, is what the relationship is
of person #1 to person #2.
To me the easiest way to describe what removed means, is to remove one
generation. So if you and Mary are 2nd cousins once removed that means that your
parent (one generation) and Mary are 2nd cousins. And your child and Mary are
2nd cousins twice removed because your child's grandparent (two generations) and
Mary are second cousins.
