.Rocker Schoolhouse

According to the Butte Archives, this schoolhouse (which still stands in Rocker), was the ONLY school in Silver Bow County that allowed the children of the immigrant Chinese miners to attend school--even though these children were Chinese-Americans.

According to the book, The Battle for Butte: Mining & Politics on the Northern Frontier 1864-1986, by famed Montana historian Michael P. Malone (see Chapter 4--Boomtown, page 67), the Chinese miners were attracted to the worked-over claims which the whites had abandoned.  And because the whites also abandoned Rocker, about 100 Chinese took it over and renamed it "Foochow" for a time.
