John B. Purcell Dies
At Downey Home On Sunday

DOWNEY, May 25.—John B. Purcell died Sunday morning at 9 o’clock.  He had gone to the old Soldiers home at Sawtelle one week ago.  His condition was not thought serious by his friends, until shortly before his death when a tumor of the lungs was found to be affecting his heart.

He was 79 years of age and a member of the 16th Michigan infantry.  His wife and five children survive him.

Mr. and Mrs. Purcell were making extensive plans to celebrate their golden wedding early in June.  Almost the last act of his life was to order the invitations for their anniversary.  He was buried in the Soldiers cemetery at Sawtelle.

LINCOLN POST FEELS THE
LOSS OF COMRADE

At the last meeting of Lincoln post, No. 2, G.A.R., and John F. Reynolds circle, No. 14, Ladies of the G.A.R., the following articles of condolence to the widow and children of Comrade John B. Purcell, who was “mustered out” on May 20 1923, at Sawtell, Cal., at the age of 79, were adopted.

“When we look back with the dragnet of memory we must say there was a real man among our comrades, one higher than all the rest.  In him we found friendship, charity and loyalty personified.  Born in Canada, where the majority were in sympathy with the rebellion, he was one who could discern the result that would follow the victory of either side and with conscientious decision and determination akin to stubbornness enlisted in the United States army and pledged his life that our government should not perish from the earth, and Oh, how many Americans that have passed the score limit wish they had done the same.

“There was a something within Comrade Purcell that radiated and made men better who associated with him.  Comrade Purcell enlisted on May 9, 1864, in company D, Sixteenth Michigan infantry, in the old Fifth corps.  After Sheridan’s cavalry had headed off Lee’s troops near Appomattox the Confederates charged the Union lines for the last time.  They had been told there was nothing in their front but cavalry.  But when they found the Fifth corps in their front instead of cavalry, retreated and refused to charge on the line of what they called ‘Knapsack cavalry.’

“Our comrade was in the great review in Washington after Lee’s surrender.

“Mustered out of the United States army, 1865.

“A grand man whom we all loved has laid him down to rest.  May he rest in peace.

“F.M. BARRETT, commander.
“H. H. MAKINSON, acting adjutant.”
