JOHN RALEY DEAD

Injured by a Train Yesterday at Crete, Neb.

AND DIED FROM INJURIES

Was an Old and Respected Resident of Butte—Body Will be Brought Here

The many friends of John Raley in Butte will be grieved to learn of his death, which occurred this morning at Crete, Neb., as a result of injuries received yesterday, by falling from a train.

Mr. Raley was the janitor of the public library since that institution was opened.  About three weeks ago he received information of the sickness of a sister in Nebraska and obtained a leave of absence until Oct. 25.  Yesterday Librarian Davies received a telegram from one of Raley’s friends in Crete, stating that Mr. Raley had been run over by a train at Crete, and that his right leg would have to be amputated.  This was followed this morning by another telegram stating that Mr. Raley had died from the shock, and that his dying wish was that his body be brought to Butte for interment.  This wish will be compiled with, the A.O.U.W. and G.A.R. organizations, to which he belonged, having already made arrangements for the removal of the body to Butte.

Mr. Raley was one of the well known characters of Butte, a man of unimpeachable integrity, who counted his friends by the thousand.  He was one of the charter members of Butte lodge No. 1, A.O.U.W., and one of its most faithful members.  He was 65 years of age and leaves a daughter, Mrs. Featherly, and a grand-daughter in this city.

Mr. Raley was born at Brownsville, Pa., and had a war record of which any man might be proud.  He enlisted in August, 1862, as a private in company B, Seventy-seventh regiment Illinois infantry, from Peoria, and was discharged in July, 1865, at the close of the rebellion.  He participated in the siege of Vicksburg and numerous other engagements, and was wounded three times.  He was a charter member of Lincoln Post, having joined September 24, 1883.  He was post commander in 1894 and had been chaplain of the post ever since that date.

The body will be brought to Butte within the next three days, and his funeral will be held under the auspices of the G.A.R. and A.O.U.W.

DIED A HERO

JOHN RALEY GAVE UP HIS LIFE
TO SAVE HIS BROTHER

John Raley, a notice of whose accidental death at Crete, Nebraska was published about a week ago, sacrificed his life to save his brother.  The Crete Herald of October 21 had the following account of the accident:

Wednesday evening about 7:15 o’clock a E. V. Raley of this city and his brother John Raley of Butte, Mont, were crossing the B & M. tracks going toward home. They were struck by a freight train which was switching in the yards.  Both men were knocked down, but E. V. Raley was only stunned and bruised, while his brother was caught beneath the wheels and his right leg entirely severed from his body about four inches below the knee.  The injured man was immediately taken to the Raley residence and Dr. Conrad summoned, who amputated the limb about half way between the hip and knee, in hopes of saving Mr. Raley’s life.  It was of no avail, however, as he died yesterday morning about 9 o’clock.  E. V. Raley suffered no broken bones, but is very sore and distressed over the occurrence.

The entire community deeply sympathizes with E. V. Raley and family and the lonely daughter out west, in this terrible affliction, and all we can add is “God’s will be done.”

FOUND DEAD IN POTATO PATCH

Face downward and with arms outstretched, the body of Samuel L. Ratliff was found by his wife and son in the potato patch on the little ranch in Two Bit Gulch on Basin creek yesterday morning. Death had not come many hours before the body was still warm.  Ratliff was apparently overcome by heart failure while working in the garden.

Mrs. Ratliff and her 13-year-old son, Sidney, had driven to the ranch yesterday morning from Butte intending to stay during the day and return last night with Mr. Ratliff, who had gone out last Friday.  When they reached the house Mrs. Ratliff called and receiving no answer went to the garden and there found the body of her husband.  She remained with the body until Joseph Richards, the undertaker, and Elmer Binder, coroner’s deputy, arrived after having been summoned over the telephone by Mrs. Ratliff's son.  Ratliff’s watch was still running when he was found.  He had purchased the ranch some time ago so his boy might have an outdoor place for recreation during the summer.

Mr. Ratliff was a native of Kentucky, 50 years of age.  He served during the Spanish American war with a Kentucky regiment and belonged to the veterans’ society.  He came to Butte eight years ago and had been employed at the brewery.  It is a coincident that his is the seventh death among the workers at the Butte brewery during the past year.  The deceased often complained of heart trouble and as it was apparent that his death was due to natural cause, Coroner Stevens will hold no inquest.

The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o’clock at Richards undertaking rooms, Rev. S. C. Blackiston, pastor of St. John’s Episcopal church, officiating.  The Brewery Workers’ union and the Americans will attend in a body.  The family home is at 1200 West Illinois street near the Brittania mine.

Christopher Columbus Redding: born Oct. 6, 1832 at Middleboro, MA, he was the second of six children born to Cheney Redding, a farmer, and his wife Mary (Barrows). According to a map of Middleboro the Redding family had a homestead on Purchade St., about halfway between Plymouth and Centre Streets.

Christopher was a 28 year-old Shoemaker from Middleboro, when he enlisted in that town on May 20, 1861 and was mustered into the 18th Massachusetts Infantry on August 24, 1861 as a Private in Co. D. Per records he was 5 ft. 8 in. tall, with a dark complexion, hazel eyes, and dark hair. Christopher was recorded as "Present on all regimental muster rolls from August 1861 to December 1862. He was wounded in the hip at the battle of Fredericksburg on Dec. 13, 1862 and admitted to Hammond Gen. Hospital, Point Lookout, MD. He was discharged on March 25, 1863 due to lameness caused by his gunshot wound.

Christopher returned to Middleboro, MA following his discharge. He was married to Frances Lombard Perry in Portsmouth, NH in 1863, however, he evidently abandoned her as he migrated to California in 1864 and she remarried to Benjamin F. Thorndike at Newburyport, MA on Aug. 5, 1869. After residing in California, he removed to Oregon where he lived until 1866; Montana to 1870, Utah and Nevada to 1873, Idaho to 1874, and then permanently in Montana from 1874, where he worked as a Miner. Per the 1880 U.S. Census he resided at Upper Moose Creek and Highland Gulch, Deer Lodge, Montana and worked as a Placer Miner. He applied for an Invalid pension on Dec. 12, 1905 and received initial benefits of $12 per month, due to his being over 70 years of age at the time of his application.
