William A. Rogers
59 years
died at Butte, Montana
December 30, 1897

William A. Rogers was born in Livingston, Columbia county, New York on September 23, 1838. When he was a boy he moved with his parents, Enoch and Harriet Rogers, to Lorain County, Ohio, where he resided until the fall of 1861 when he moved to Knoxville, Iowa. In the summer of 1862 he responded to freedom's call and enlisted in Co. G. 18th Iowa Infantry. He remained in the service three years; being mustered out August 6th, 1865. After that time he made his home Iowa, spending most of his time at Prairie City. After the death of his parents he had made his home with his sister, Mrs. M. J.  Cowman until he went west spending a winter in Salt Lake City. From there he went to Montana, stopping awhile in Anaconda, but finally making his way to Butte where he was stricken with apoplexy while walking on the street, and lived but a short time. He was a stranger to most in Butte, and it was several days before the authorities found his friends by letters found upon his person. It is said that remains were interred in Mount Moriah cemetery, Butte City.  However, his exact burial location seems to have been in lost cemetery records of that time frame.

DEATH OF AN OLD MAN

The Coroner Hears a Report That
He had Been Roughly Handled

An old man names W. A. Rodgers died last evening at the county jail, supposedly from apoplexy.  Rodgers was about 72 years old and very poor.  He had on numerous occasions of late been given a bed at the city jail.  Policeman Wilson found him on the street yesterday in apparently a sickly condition and took him to the city jail.  It was decided to put a charge of vagrancy against him, and Officers Wilson and Teague were sent to take him to the county jail.  Upon arriving there Dr. Brooke was called, and and after making an examination stated that he was suffering from apoplexy, but he did not consider the man's life in immediate danger.  Last evening Rodgers died very suddenly, and his remains were sent to Sherman's undertaking rooms.  Coroner Tremblay was notified and began an investigation, having heard that Rodgers was roughly handled by the officers, and that he had been thrown on the concrete flagging in front of the court house, striking on the back of his head.  He did not find evidence enough last evening to warrant holding an inquest, but may order one today.  The deceased man is not known to have any relatives in this part of the country.

Civil War Vet Succumbs

Soldier, prospector and justice of the peace, who came to Butte from Deadwood, S. D. in 1876, leading a pack mule, passed away at the home of his nephew, John Mooney, in Walkerville yesterday. He was 85 years of age.

LONG TREK ENDS
FOR PROSPECTOR OF WALKERVILLE

Edward Rooney,
Who Led Pack Mule From
Deadwood, S.D., to Butte, Dies

Edward Rooney’s long trek has ended.  Soldier, wanderer, prospector, mine owner and justice of the peace, the pioneer Walkerville resident, who trudged into the Butte district leading a travel-worn pack mule in 1876, faced death late yesterday afternoon for the last time.  He passed away at the home of his nephew John Mooney, No. 5 Peal Street, Walkerville, at the age of 85.

Edward Rooney trekked through life.  His trek had helped make history, carried him from one side of the nation to the other and helped make Butte the great mining center it is now.

Born in Plymouth, Pa., on January 18, 1845, Mr. Rooney began his career at the age of 16 when he answered the call of President Lincoln and enlisted in the Pennsylvania infantry for service in the Civil war.  For a youth of 16, war was a strenuous business, but three years and 10 months of active service with his regiment, trekking from one field of battle to another, only served to fit him for the severe life of a Western prospector.

After the war, like after all wars, Mr. Rooney, then entering his twenties, with many more of the returned soldiers, sought a means of livelihood.  He engaged in one occupation then another, until the early 70's found him in the West—Deadwood, S.D.  The West that had called him that far, summoned again.

Lack of finances for traveling was only an obstacle to overcome.  He hurdled that obstacle when he pooled his resources and secured a pack mule, a grub stake and the necessary prospector’s tools.  It was a long hike from Deadwood to Butte, but his arrival here might well be entered in the annals of local history.

Mr. Rooney began mining operations shortly after his arrival.  Old-timers credit him with breaking the first ground for the Alice and the Moulton mines.  Later he became owner of the Rooney lode in North Walkerville but disposed of his property.

As age crept upon him, Mr. Rooney gave up the active life of the prospector and miner and entered other pursuits.  It was in 1918 he was elected to the office of justice of peace by his many Walkerville friends.  He served in that capacity for two terms.

Always strong of body, Mr. Rooney’s death came as a shock to his many friends.  He became ill but a few days ago and sank rapidly until death claimed him yesterday.

While funeral arrangements have not been made, it was stated last night that full military honors will be accorded by members of the Lincoln Post of the G. A. R. and Silver Bow post of the American Legion.

Surviving him besides his nephew here are a brother in Colorado and several nieces and nephews in Plymouth.  The body is at Duggan’s chapel.
