Major
Fellows David PEASE was married to
Marguerite Margrete WALLACE
1861 in Fort Berthold, Dakota Territory.
The 1885-H612 Crow Records identify the children by name and ages. Bios
on FD Pease identify her relationship with his son, George, and their
subsequent marriage. It is not understood why they separated after the birth of
their third child, George in 1865. Marguerite Margrete WALLACE was born on
April 10, 1836 in Crow Reservation. 1885
Crow - H612. Lists her children by their father's name. Her maiden Indian name
hasn't been located. She was taken in and raised by her older sister and
husband John Wallace, thus she must have acquired the Wallace surname. (Viki
Pease details) Birth was reported to be near Reed Point. She died on January 9, 1902 in Yellowstone
Co, MT. Mountview, and buried under her
married & maiden name as "Mother/Margrete Wallace Cooper. Native of
Montana" Dates on headstone read: Born Apr. 10, 1836 / Died Jan 9, 1902.
Drowned at "Old Rabbit Crossing" on the Big Horn River near present
day Ft Smith, MT. (Still in Yellowstone Co) Viki Pease details.
Margarete
is part "Indian." Lulu reported on her marriage license to Samuel
Davis that her mother's name was Maggie Lewis (this might have been her actual
maiden name), or else she possibly wanted to conceal her real identity as being
a full-blooded Crow Indian. In her marriage to Francis Snyder, Lulu listed her
mother as Margaret Wallace, and in her marriage to Oscar Vanaman she
deliberately omitted her mother's name!
Only one record was located that tied Margaret Wallace to both FD Pease
and James B Cooper; the "Crow Population Census." This census was
conducted to determine how many Crow Indians and their blood percentage existed
at certain times of the centuries, regardless where they resided. The records
were compiled by family groupings, and the progression of family names and
position within the grouping can be noted. This was not a Dated Census, but
compiled from the future. It provides the last marriage link for female
children who later married. This was so that the records are verifiable for use
in the population census. Why the other marriages and their children were
omitted, is not known, but probably an oversight, as that action causes the
census to be understated. It's suspected that this was an oversight in the
on-line compilation, and the actual records at Big Horn College will have all
the links.

From the
Family Search File Records it would appear that there are two separate Margaret
Wallace’s and that these families are not linked together. It is much more
likely that they are one and the same, and that after the birth of FD Pease's
third child, he left his wife. The biographical accounts of his life after
marriage never refer to any spouse, only that he was "married to an Indian
woman." He apparently went to see his kids all by himself.
Major Fellows
David PEASE and Marguerite Margrete WALLACE had the following children:
A.
Leatus W. PEASE was born in 1861 in Dakota Territory. He died on January 17, 1905. Reported in 1885-H612 Crow Records.(Age 24).
The Familysearch files stated she died in 1918 in Seattle. [AFN:QXJL-3B]
B.
La Vantia PEASE was born in 1863 in Dakota Territory. Listed as age 26 when married. She was an accomplished pianist. In 1912,
POLK Directory, she is listed as having 320 acres in Absarokee. (Mrs. Lavantra
Pearson) John M. Pearson is noted as holding 155 acres in same location.
La
Vantia PEASE was married to John M. PEARSON (Jack) (son of William PEARSON and
Mahalaia MARTIN) on October 23, 1890 in Stillwater Co, MT. John M. PEARSON (Jack) was born in 1861
in MO. Jack was originally a local
cowboy in Montana. When the couple married F.D. Pease bought the Old Crow
Agency buildings for a successful bid of $500 and moved them to tier place near
Columbus. This included the storehouses, barns and houses. On New Years eve,
1891, Major Pearson was at their home celebrating the birth of their first
daughter and having a family dinner. The cowboys on the ranch had cut a piece
of wood carelessly for their wood stove, and a large piece was sticking out
from the stove and began to burn out of control.
Every
building at the Old Agency burned to the ground. Horses and pedigreed dogs were
lost, but the saved the Pearson piano and a $20 gold piece. In the blaze the
Pearson's lost clothes, furniture, a whole winter's worth of supplies. J. B.
Annin, a Columbus storekeeper advanced a winter grubstake for them, plus he
gave them money to buy hay for their stock.
The
Pearson's then rebuilt their home near the original site of the Agency, using
some of the adobe walls, which still were standing as a partial landmark. This
fire probably determined where the future town of Absarokee would be located.
S. T. Simonsen established a trading post soon afterward about three miles
below the Pearson's burnt-out buildings. Had it not been for the fire it was
believed by Major Pease that the Old Agency site was goiung to become
Absarokee.
In
1905 John was listed as a live stockbreeder & dealer in Absarokee.
(POLK) La Vantia PEASE and John M.
PEARSON (Jack) had the following children:
1.
Helen PEARSON was born in December 1891 in On Pearson Ranch, Columbus,
MT.
2.
Leah PEARSON.
C.
George H. PEASE was born in 1865.
He died in 1916 in Lodge Grass, MT.
Died in auto accident, after having his leg amputated.
George
H. PEASE was married to Sarah WALKER (daughter of James WALKER and WALKS
AMONGST) in 1888 in Bond's Mission, (Catholic) Hardin, MT. Sarah WALKER was born in 1866 in Fort
Berthold, Dakota Territory. She died in
1953 in Crow Agency Hospital, MT. Died
in Crow Agency hospital following a fall that broke her pelvis. At age 13, Sarah was sent to the Hampton
Institute in VA. She remained there for eight years, and Booker T. Washington
was one of her teachers. She returned to
MT in 1886, and was a teacher at the Unitarian Church in Hardin at Bonds
Mission. She is credited with changing the name of the town where she resided
from "Greasey Grass" to Lodge Grass.

II. James
B. COOPER (Squawman) was born in 1846 in Twiggs County, GA. Corrected per MT 1930 Census. Note that the
middle initial for James is sometimes listed as a D, or as a B. He is listed as
being 84 years old, and both parents born in Georgia. He died on July 10, 1940 in Yellowstone Co,
MT. Buried in Mountview. During his
active life he was reported as having been killed three different times, all
erroneously. He was well acquainted with Yellowstone Kelly, Charley Reynolds
and Muggins Taylor. After settling down he operated the Salvation Army in
Billings with one of his sons. The
female children of this marriage are identified in the marriage records at
Yellowstone Courthouse. The complete family listing is shown in Crow records
for household 1885-612. Margaret is identified as Mrs. J. B. Cooper. Her actual
name is noted in the marriage records as mother of the daughters.
James B.
COOPER (Squawman) was married to Marguerite Margrete WALLACE on October 3,
1869. From Montana Biographies collected
by ID O'Donnell, 1928-1929.
Marguerite Margrete WALLACE was born on April 10, 1836 in Crow

From the
Family Search File Records (LDS in Salt Lake City) it would appear that there
are two separate Margaret Wallace’s and that these families are not linked

Territory. She died on March 18, 1922 in
Yellowstone Co, MT. (From Death

Joseph William COOPER was born in 1926.
b.
Susy Luella COOPER was born in 1930.
5.
Joseph William COOPER Jr. was born in 1899.

C.
Sylvania COOPER was born in 1873.
Witnesses were: George R. Themond & Lulu M. Cooper
Sylvania
COOPER was married to Don HARDY on February 16, 1896 in Canyon Creek,
Yellowstone Co, MT. Reported also in
Billings Gazette dated: 2-18-1896.
D.
Martha M. COOPER was born in 1874 in ND.
Per marriage book, born in ND. (Probably Dakota Territory)
Martha
M. COOPER was married to Theodore H. SCHENDERLEIN on October 26, 1892 in Crow
Reservation, Yellowstone Co, MT. Witness
was Charles Edwards. Article is posed in the Billings Gazette dated: Nov 3,
1892.
E.
Lulu M. COOPER was born in 1879 in Fort Union, Dawson Co., MT. The Crow Census tabulation of their family
states 1877. The MT Census for 1930 states her age to be 51. (Thus she was born
in 1879) (Corected census date, had in error placed age at 57, typo)
She
reported in her marriage to Samuel Davis that she was born in Fort Berthold,
ND. Lulu apparently left or divorced her
first husband prior to 1917. She then took up with Oscar Vanaman.
Lulu
M. COOPER was married to Francis L. SNYDER (son of Henry L. SNYDER and
Christian DURMENT) on August 26, 1896 in Billings, Yellowstone Co., MT. Witnesses were: Mrs. RE McAndrew & T. W.
Cooper. Married in Billings. Records are in Court House in Billings. Listed
were her mother: Margaret Wallace, and father: James B. Cooper. This was her
first marriage. Lulu divorced Samuel prior to 1901, reason not provided. Francis L. SNYDER was born in 1869 in
Fort Berthold, McClean Co, ND.
Lulu
M. COOPER was married to Samuel DAVIS (son of Thomas DAVIS and Mary HILL) on
January 23, 1901 in Billings, Yellowstone Co., MT. Recorded in Yellowstone County. She married
Samuel under her maiden name of Cooper. After Lulu's divorce from Francis
Snyder, she probably took back her maiden name. On her marriage record she
reported that she had been previously married. Samuel DAVIS was born in 1868 in Fort
Berthold, Dakota Territory. He died
about 1918 in Billings, Yellowstone Co., MT.
There is one Samuel Davis, who died in the local area that could possibly
be this Samuel. He died on 6 May 1918. No specific details have been researched
for confirmation. However, it is probable that Lulu's first child, Peter, was
born from this marriage, and that after she married Oscar Vanaman the son was
adopted. It could also be that Oscar and Lulu lived together for five years
before getting married, but that seems highly unlikely for the times.
Lulu
M. COOPER was married to Oscar Charles VANAMAN (Ausker) (son of Charles M.
VANAMAN and Mary Elizabeth SAUL) on March 6, 1923 in Billings, Yellowstone Co.,
MT. Lulu reported she was first maried
to Oscar in 1917 (Mt 1930 Census) although Oscar claims he was married about
6-7 years later. This is probably a Common Law Marriage, as the seven years
fits the situation. Their son Peter was born the year following their marriage. The marriage record is on file at the
Yellowstone County Courthouse. He 2nd married name was Lulu Davis. Recorded in
Certificate Book #15 Page 373. Marriage License filed under #8694. Marriage was
performed by J. A. Kring and witnessed by Peter E. Cooper and Mrs. P. Cooper. Oscar Charles VANAMAN (Ausker) was born
on June 9, 1876 in Cumberland Co, NJ.
Lulu M. COOPER and Oscar Charles VANAMAN (Ausker) had the following
children:
1.
Peter D. VANAMAN was born in 1918.
On MT 1930 Census listed as 1/8th Crow. Age 12. (Record # 148-B)
F.
Peter E. COOPER was born about 1880.
From compiled Crow records of Households 1910-548 & 1930-154.
Marriage and name from Yellowstone Courthouse.
Peter
E. COOPER was married to Clara MC QUERY on December 15, 1902 in Billings,
Yellowstone Co., MT. Peter E. COOPER and

MT. Died at age five weeks. Buried in
Mountview as Son of Robert Cooper.

James B. COOPER was born on January 28, 1911.
7.
Samuel Alexander COOPER was born on September 16, 1914. He died on February 2, 1938.
G.
Cynthia COOPER was born in 1884 in Custer, Yellosstone Co, MT.. Now Big Horn Co.
Cynthia
COOPER was married to Danel T. HALL on April 17, 1902 in Billings, Yellowstone
Co., MT.
Cynthia
COOPER was married to Charles ANDERSON.
No record of this marriage exists at the Yellowstone County Courthouse.
The marriage was reported on Crow Census, and must have been later that her
first marriage to Hall.
Trails
and Tales South of the Yellowstone has a brief history in it of James and
Margrete Cooper. They had a daughter
Lulu (Cooper) Vanaman. The story is
written by Dahlia Anderson Halverson and she say's Lulu was her aunt. I think
Dahlia's mother was Lulu's sister Cynthia. Also Dahlia Halverson has a son Jack
who still lives here. (From Diane Cooper)
Charles ANDERSON was born in Sweden.
Cynthia COOPER and Charles ANDERSON had the following children:
1.
Dahlia ANDERSON.
2.
John J. ANDERSON was born on June 21, 1907 in Yellowstone Co, MT. He died on October 20, 1920 in Billings,
