Clarence N. Smith, 48 West Iron, died in a local hospital late Saturday night after a brief illness. He had been a resident of the Mining City 35 years. Mr. Smith was a veteran of World War I. He was a miner. Survivors include his wife, Eileen; daughter, Nancy Smith of Butte; son, Robert Smith of Butte, brothers-in-law and sisters-in law Mr. and Mrs. Gregory Kiefer, Mr. and Mrs. Glen Louis, Mr. and Mrs. Robin Arlt and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Giacomino, all of Butte, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Peterson of Melrose and Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Lochrie of Seattle; three brothers in Illinois, three sisters in California and nephews and nieces in Illinois and California. The body is in Duggan’s Merrill Mortuary.

Clarence Smith who died Saturday in a Butte hospital was laid to rest Wednesday afternoon following funeral services in Duggan’s Merrill Chapel. Edward Mitchell officiated. Mrs. Edward Quinn, accompanied by Mrs. Earl Littlejohn, sang “Beyond the Sunset” and “Abide with Me.” Military honors were accorded Mr. Smith, a war veteran, by officers and member of Silver Bow Post No.1, American Legion. Pallbearers were Nick Kiefer, Gregory Kiefer, Fred Giacomino, Glen Lewis, Robert Carter and Eldred Kiefer. Interment was in Mountain View cemetery. Legionnaires giving military honors were Don Wedlake, color bearer; Kenneth Sheehan and Arne Hjalmstad, color guards; William O. Gilbert, sergeant; Arthur Clark, Lester Franks, Thomas Golden, Clark Koeneman and Phillip McDonald, firing squad; Judge John B. McClernan, Chaplin; Lou Bird, acting commander, and William Daley, bugler.
