William H. Maloney
One Time Mayor of Butte
Dies at 82

William H.  Maloney, 82, mayor of Butte during World War I, died Tuesday morning in a local hospital following a brief illness.  Mr. Maloney, practicing attorney in Butte since 1897, and a 50-year pin member of the Silver Bow County Bar Assn., entered the hospital Tuesday.  He had attended to business affairs in his law office in the First National Bank Building on Monday.

Mr. Maloney, since the death of his wife, Loretta, in June 1955, had made his home with a nephew and nice, Mr. and Mrs. Robert P. Burns, 1125 W. Porphyry.

The long-time popular Butte attorney was active in politics here for many years.  He was elected mayor on the Democratic ticket serving one term, 1917-1019.

He will long be remembered in national Democratic circles for his seconding address in behalf of the nomination of Al Smith at the 1928 Democratic national convention.  Mr. Maloney was a delegate from Montana, and his seconding address was reported at that time, and reportedly still stands, as the shortest on record of a Democratic national convention.  Mr. Maloney received the plaudits of the weary convention delegates, and also national publicity for the briefness of his address.

Mr. Maloney, in addition to serving as mayor of Butte, was also a deputy county attorney here, serving under Frank J. Roe.  Later he devoted his entire time to private practice in the legal profession but was active in democratic political circles.

A native of Massachusetts, he was a graduate of Holy Cross College Worcester, Mass.

In addition to Mr. and Mrs. Burns, other surviving relatives are a sister-in-law, Mrs. Helen Burns of Minnesota; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Anne Mueller, Seattle, a niece, Mrs. Jean Woodfield of Miles City; nephews, Joseph Burns and James Burns of Cleveland.
