FINE TRIBUTE IS PAID LATE CHARLES P. NEVIN
BY BUTTE CHAMBER DIRECTORS’ BOARD

A fine tribute to the memory of the late Charles P. Nevin is contained in resolutions
composed by the board of directors of the Butte Chamber of Commerce.  Mr. Nevin,
long time resident of this city and former mayor, died last month.  The resolutions on his death follow:

Charles P. Nevin
1881-1936

“Words are futile to describe the sense of loss and loneliness of those in Butte who had known the late Charles P. Nevin as friend and townsman.  Words are inadequate to express that sense of sympathy, that bond of companionship, that knowledge of good will and good cheer that arose out of long acquaintance with Mr. Nevin.

“It may be said that all who have lived in Butte over the last 20 years had known him and all who knew him loved him.

“He possessed those peculiar qualities of sound judgment combined with good will, embedded in a friendly nature and a happy disposition that endeared him to all, caused his friends to seek his counsel and to value his advice.

“During his latter years Mr. Nevin constituted a heroic example for those who are inclined to grumble and repine.  Suffering constantly from illness, he, nevertheless, maintained an unflagging and life-long interest in civic affairs, mingled constantly with his fellow citizens, shared steadily in all the plans and hopes of those who seek the progress and advancement of the community.  And despite his suffering he did all of this in a spirit of cheerfulness, of kindly banter, of humorous anecdote, which, with his wise counsel, helped mightily to build the difficulties and discouragements of recent years.

“Charles P. Nevin was a tried and trusted public official in whom all reposed highest confidence.  Time and again he was called upon to serve his fellow citizens in one capacity or another.  He was a man of intensely human sympathies.  His fellow men and his government called upon him to use those qualifications for the public weal in our dark days of public need.  Always he acquitted himself with highest honor and always he won increasing gratitude and esteem.

“In the Chamber of Commerce as in his other activities, he was both respected and beloved. Men depended upon his judgment, sought his opinions, loved his picturesque humor, acted upon his suggestions.  His death leaves in the ranks of the chamber a gap which no other can fill.  His memory will continue to dwell and with us as among the most cherished of our friendships—and we realize that a friendship based upon human qualities so fine and strong as his are among the rarest and most prized of all our possessions.

“Our friendship with Charles Nevin is not dead; it slumbers to be recalled frequently that it may help us as we tread the stony stretches in our path of life.  His quaint words, his fearless attitude, his rugged determination, his utter frankness and his wise counsels will never be forgotten.  They enrich our lives, will help to fortify us to the end.

“Thus we do humbly acknowledge the contribution which he had made to us and our community and state.  His character has left an indelible impress upon us all.

“To Mr. Nevin’s widow and son we offer our heartfelt condolences, and we trust that this effort to record in some feeble degree our esteem and affection for him may bring them some consolation in the sorrow.  “It is hereby ordered that copies of this resolution shall be sent to Mr. Nevin’s window and to his son and that a copy shall be preserved in are records.

“THE BUTTE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
By this Board of Directors.”
