Spanish American War

First Montana Volunteer Infantry was mustered at Helena, Montana in May, 1898 and went to Camp Merritt.  From there they went to the Philippines on July 18, 1898 and arrived at Manila about 5 weeks later.  The unit stayed for a year, fighting in the Philippine-American War.  They lost one officer and 20 men killed in action, 14 men to disease and one to drowning and one to desertion; 9 officers and 111 men were Wounded.  Several men of Company E were from Beaverhead County (with no deaths in this company).
