Policeman Alex Couture died of injuries to his head, sustained while he struggled with a suspect in front of the Post Office in Elmo, Montana.

While investigating a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot of the Post Office about 3:00 a.m., he became involved in a scuffle with the occupants of the vehicle. He was knock down and his head struck the pavement.  He suffered a skull fracture. 

The two men he was struggling with alerted the postmaster's wife, who called for an ambulance. However, a responding state trooper took him to a local hospital. He was being transferred to a second hospital but died from his injuries on the way.

Alex Couture had served with the Flathead Indian Nation Police Department for 12 years. He is survived by his wife and five children.
