BIRTH/DEATH RECORDS
BIRTH: Records for those born
in Butte-Silver Bow are housed in the Clerk & Recorder’s
Office and date back to approximately the 1890’s. For
genealogical research, records older than 29 years are open
to the public and can be viewed during office hours of 8:00
am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Copies of these
records are $.50. These can also be ordered by mail using
the
Birth Certificate Request Form. For more information see
the Birth
and Death Records Page.
You will need to have name at birth, date of birth, mother's
maiden name and father's name; also reason for request.
Note: Certified
copies of Birth records can be obtained in any County
Clerk & Recorder or
Registrar's office in Montana from the birth years 1920
and later via mail or in-person. Records can also be
ordered online through the
Montana Office of Vital Statistics'
VitalChek service. Records prior to 1920 must be
obtained in the county of birth. These records are
printed from a statewide database and can be printed for
anyone born in the state of Montana. State law
limits the parties that can obtain a certified birth
certificate and proof of identity is required.
DEATH:
People doing genealogy research will only get
an informational copy ($0.50). Fees must be paid in advance
of information being sent, so name, phone, fax or e-mail
information should be provided for contact. A stamped,
self-addressed envelope is requested. You will need person's
full name and date of death. If date is not known, there is
a charge of $1.00 per year searched for the information
requested. These searches are done as staff time is
available due to staffing shortage, but generally within a
week. The more information provided, the less fees will
likely be charged.
